Ballet today, that is “Sleeping Beauty”, “Giselle” and of course “Swan Lake”, ballet today, but that is also “Le sacre du printemps” by Pina Bausch, “The second detail” by William Forsythe, “Dance Suite” by Martin Schläpfer or “Leonce and Lena” by Christian Spuck. With her camera, photographer Bettina Stöß has taken a broad and deep dimensional survey of the contemporary ballet world, the results of which are exemplarily visible in 19 photo series. The illustrated book presents classical and modern pieces danced by twelve companies, including the Staatsballett Berlin with its celebrated first solo dancer Polina Semionowa, the Stuttgarter Ballett, the Tanztheater Wuppertal and the Ballett am Rhein, Düsseldorf. Each photo series is accompanied by a text by dance publicist Klaus Kieser.

Unique in this form, the volume shows the art of ballet in all its facets: elegant, graceful, masterful, but also provocative, vulnerable, physical. “Dance, dance, otherwise we are lost!” Many snapshots, which can only be captured in photography, convey an impression of the existentiality of this art form and give an idea of what Pina Bausch meant by that dictum, which has meanwhile advanced to become the title of the film.
